This scene is calliing for an elaborate kung-fu style fight scene, or some melodramatic John Woo slow motion, or some Michael Bay-style loud sound effects and shaky camera. Colonel Edwards delivers one of the movie's best lines: "Get out of here Jeff, the ship's on fire!"
